HOCKEY
Hockey is the family of sport in which two teams play
against each other by trying to maneuver a ball or puck hockey stick .In many
areas one sport (typically field hockey or ice hockey) is generally called simply
as hockey.
ETYMOLOGY
The first recorded use of the world ”hockey” is found in the
proclamation issued by Edneard 3 of England in 1363 banning certains types of
sports and games .The word hockey tself
of unknown origin ,although it is likely a derivative of Hoquet ,a middle
French word for shepherd’s stave. The curved or ”hooked” ends of the sticks
used for hockey would indeed have resembled these staves.
HISTORY
Games played with curved sticks and a ball can be found in
the histories of many culture. In Egypt ,4000 years old carving features team
playing with sticks. Most evidence of hockey like games during the middle ages
is found in legislation corncerning
sports and games.
SUBTYPES:-
(1) FIELD HOCKEY
Field hockey is
played on gravel ,natural grass ,sand-based or water based artificial turf with
a small hard ball approximately 73mm in diameter.Modern field hockey sticks are
J shaped made up of a composite wood,glass fibre or carbon fibre.It was
national sports of india until ministry of youth affairs declared india has no national games in 2012
august.
(2) ICE HOCKEY
Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice,using a
three inched diameter (76.2mm) vulcanized rubber dise called puck.The puck is
often frozen before high of bouncing and friction of the ice. It is the most
popular games in Canada, finland, Slovakia, latvia and the Czech republic.
Ice hockey is national sport of Latvia and the national hunter
sport of Canada.
(3) ROLLER HOCKEY
Roller hockey, also known as quad hockey, international style
ball hockey and hoqeui em patins is an oveuaching name for a roller sport that
has existed since long before imline staves were invented.
(4) SLEDGE HOCKEY
Sledge hockey is a form ice-hockey designed for players with
physical disabilities affecting their lower bodies. Players sit on double-
bladed sledges and use two sticks; each stick has a blade at one end and small
picks at the other. Canada is a recognised international leader in the
development of the sport and equipment for players. Much of the equipment for
sports was first developed in Canada, such as a sledge hockey sticks laminated
with fiberglass.
The first game of inline sledge hockey was played at bisley,
England, on the 19th December 2009 between the hull stingrays and
Grimsby redwings.
(5) STREET HOCKEY
Also known as read hockey, this is a dry- land variant of
ice and roller hockey played on a hard surface(usually ashphalt).Most of the, a
bal is used instead of a puck, and generally no protective equipment is worn.
Street hockey is played year around.
