HOMONYMS , HOMOPHONES and HOMOGRAPHS

HOMONYMS:-
Homonym is, in the strict sense, one of a group of words that share the same spelling and the same pronunciation but have different meanings.

Examples of homonyms are:-

1.Stalk  (part of a plant)
   Stalk  (follow/harass a person)
2.Left  (past tense of leave)
   Left (opposite of right).
3.Bear (large animal)
   Bear (to withstand)
4.Bank (place for money)
   Bank (river side)
5.Top (highest part of something)
   Top (to perform the best)

HOMOPHONES:-
Homophones (literally "same sound") are usually defined as words that share the same pronunciation, regardless of how they are spelled. Since homophones sound alike , their spellings confuse us when it comes to writing.
Homophones are often used to create puns and to deceive the reader (as in  crossword puzzle) or to suggest multiple meanings.

Examples of homophones are:-


1.     Know (have learnt or  to recognize)
No (not any)
2.     Altar (table used in religious service)
Alter (make or become different)
3.     Assent (agreement of someone in authority)
Ascent (the act of climbing)
4.     Sun (the star round which the earth revolves)
Son (a male child)
5.     Elicit (to draw out a response)
Illicit (forbidden by law or rules)



HOMOGRAPHS:-
Homographs (literally "same writing") are usually defined as words that share the same spelling, regardless of how they are pronounced.

Example of homographs are:-

1. Tear (to rip)
    Tear (liquid that comes out of your eyes)
2.  Bow (a weapon used for shooting arrows)
     Bow (to bend the top part of your body forward)
3.  Content (piece of writing)
     Content (happy and satisfied)
4.  Invalid (not legally)
     Invalid (someone who cannot look after themselves because of illness and old age)
5.  Sow (to plant seed)
     Sow (female pig)
