punctuations

                                  PUNCTUATIONS


Punctuation marks are symbols that indicate the structure and organization of written language, as well as intonation and pauses to be observed when reading aloud.

1.THE FULL STOP
It is denoted by [.]
It is also called a period.
It is used to mark the end of a declarative or an imperative sentence.
Eg: 1. This is a car.
       2. His name is Arjun.

2.THE COMMA
It is denoted by [,]
It represents the shortest pause.
Eg:1.Ram, Rajesh and rohan are friends.
      2.England, France and Italy formed an alliance.

3.THE QUESTION MARK
It is denoted by [?]
It is used after direct questions.
Eg: 1.What is your name?

       2.How are you?

4.THE COLON
It is denoted by [:]
It is used before a list or an explanation that is preceded by a clause that can stand by itself.
Eg:1.Fruits:mango,banana,apple,orange etc.

5.THE SEMICOLON
It is denoted by [;]
The semicolon allows the writer to imply a relationship between nicely balanced ideas without actually stating that relationship.
Eg: 1.God gave her peace; her land reposed;


6.THE EXCLAMATION MARK
It is denoted by [!]
It is used after interjections and after phrases and sentences expressing sudden emotion  or wish.
Eg: Alas! , oh!

7.INVERTED COMMAS
It is denoted by [“”]
it is used to set off material that represents quoted or spoken language. Quotation marks also set off the titles of things that do not normally stand by themselves: short stories, poems, and articles.
Eg: What do you think of Robert Frost's "Design"?

8.THE HYPHEN
It is denoted by [-]
It is used to connect the parts of a compound word.
Eg: Man-of-war

9.THE APOSTROPHE
It is denoted by [’]
We use an apostrophe to create possessive forms, contractions, and some plurals. The apostrophe shows where a letter or letters have been left out of a contracted verb.
Eg: Don’t , I’ve

10.BRACKETS
It is denoted by [( )]
it is used to include material that you want to de-emphasize or that wouldn't normally fit into the flow of your text but you want to include nonetheless.
Eg: Thirty-five years after his death, Robert Frost (we remember him at Kennedy's inauguration) remains America's favorite poet.
